The Sweet 16 in the 1999 AAA division consisted of the Suffolk PAL Silver Shields, Richmond Hill Stars, Rhode Island Saints, Chicago Bruins (No. 4 Tier 2), Plymouth Stingrays (No. 20 Tier 2), Team Maryland, the Toledo Cherokee, Green Bay Gamblers, Miami Toros (No. 11 Tier 2), Grey Bruce Highlanders, Oakland Jr. Grizzlies (No. 5 Tier 2), Greater NY Stars, Stevens Point 1A, the Anchorage Northstars, Mississauga Braves and Long Island Royals.

In Sweet 16 play it was Suffolk who knocked off the Richmond Hill Stars, the Saints who escaped with a narrow 4-3 win over the Bruins, the Stingrays who cruised to victory of Team Maryland, the Gamblers who eliminated the Cherokee, the Toros who took down the Highlanders, the Jr. Grizzlies who beat the Stars, Stevens Point who defeated the Northstars and the Royals who beat the Braves 4-3.

The quarterfinals saw many low scoring games as both the Jr. Gamblers and Royals defeated their opponent’s 3-0, while Suffolk and the Toros both defeated their opponent’s 3-2. In the semis it was the Royals who eliminated the Jr. Gamblers with an exciting 3-2 win and the Toros who took down Suffolk, defeating them 5-3.

In the final game it took until the final second in the 1st period for someone to get on the scoreboard as the Royals’ Bobby Trivigno beat the Toros goalie. The Toros would tie the game with 10:08 remaining in the 2nd period as Randy Hernandez connected off a feed from Tim Kent to beat the Royals netminder. Another late goal, this time with 1:54 remaining would give the Royals the lead again, as Scotty Osani put home the eventual game winner. Despite getting outshot 12-6 in the final period, the Royals were able to hold on to their lead and take home the title with help of the excellent play from goalie Max Rovner.
